Tinnitus Symptoms

When you hear some kind of noise every now and then in your inner ear or your head and this sounds like ringing, buzzing, roaring, swishing, or hissing, then chances are you have tinnitus. This noise can only heard by you. You may experience tinnitus if you are inside a booth that is soundproof but by going out the noise is gone and this phenomenon is called normal tinnitus. Everybody will have the same experience in the soundproof booth.

This condition may occur in the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear, or brain abnormalities.  Some factors that add up to the development of tinnitus such as ototoxic substances like aspirin, antibiotics and other medications. Too much exposure to loud noise is also one of the most common causes of tinnitus which is also known to cause damage to hearing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are not aware of the harmful effects of too much noise like the sound of firearms and the high intensity music. People who are exposed in a loud noise environment must wear earplugs since it can help to prevent tinnitus. There may be some underlying disorders that contribute to tinnitus such as Meniere’ syndrome, thyroid disease, vitamin B12 (most common), or psychological disorders (eg anxiety, depression).

You have to go and visit a physician specialist in ear disease commonly an otologist ora neurotologist if in case you experience several tinnitus symptoms. Physical examination should be done to find out the root cause of it and also diagnostic testing must be conducted to find out if there is hearing loss. Tinnitus symptoms must be thoroughly discussed because there are some types of tinnitus that are irreversible thus you may need the right teaching and counselling about ways to adjust treatment and to deal with tinnitus in the future.

Now what things are to be done if you have tinnitus?

 You should avoid exposure to loud noise as much as possible.

 Have enough rest and sleep, and prevent fatigue.

 Do regular exercise.

 Diet – avoid too much salt, no caffeine (tea, coffee, cola, chocolate) and nicotine since these can increase tinnitus in nonspecific fashion.

Avoid ototoxic medications .

If anxiety or depression caused the tinnitus symptom, consultation with the psychologist or psychiatrist is truly useful.
